Chapter 12
With a shudder of pleasure, Kat dropped onto the blanket. The water had been pleasantly cool, the sun was blazing hot. Her feet stung from the race across the heated sand. The temperature, here in the shade of the tree, was perfect.
She turned to look for Roarke. He was still in the lake, standing with the snorkel gear dangling from his hand, looking at something she couldn't see on the other side of the rock promontory. It was the perfect opportunity to examine him at her leisure.
His well-muscled body gleamed with dampness. His wet trunks clung to his hips. He was beautifully built without an ounce of fat on him anywhere. His face was in profile against the brilliant blue water, the features that were so strongly masculine displayed to advantage.
She wondered what it was that had caught his attention. He seemed so absorbed. Then he bent to dip his snorkel gear in the water. The muscles under the smooth skin of his back flexed. She shuddered again, this time as a spasm of sexual desire uncoiled deep in her belly.
She remembered running her hands over that back as he rose above her, clutching those hard arms just as he thrust into her body. And she wanted that experience again. Desperately.
But it had to be her request, and it wasn't the reason he had brought her here to this intimate, private place. He wanted to talk about his wife--ex-wife. She didn't want to hear about his marriage. She sensed his turmoil, thought he still had feelings for a woman gone from his life for seven years. But part of her, the desperate, insecure part of her that obsessed about failed relationships, needed to hear his story.
He had been sending confusing signals ever since they left the hotel. She had surprised a strangely contemplative expression on his face once or twice. A couple of times, mutual teasing had seemed headed for more intense verbal play with definite sexual overtones when he had abruptly backed off.
Roarke had something serious on his mind and Kat was beginning to feel anxious and confused.
She didn't know if she had forgiven him yet.
She did know she loved him but didn't have a clue how he really felt about her. Physical attraction was a long way from this painful brew of emotions churning inside of her. Emotions, she reminded herself, that had no future.
Needing something to do, she reached for her bag to find a towel and her brush. When she looked up again, Roarke was coming toward her. He seemed unaffected by the sting of the hot sand. His head was lowered as if deep in thought. As he reached the blanket, he visibly shrugged off his preoccupation, smiled and threw himself down beside her.
"Fish eagles," he said. "A pair of them. Magnificent birds. Look, there's one now." He pointed skyward, and she followed the direction of his finger to see a majestic bird, dark wings outstretched, circling high above. In the next instant, a harsh cry split the air.
